Step 1: Extract Your Character Definition & Lore Prompts

A character's "brain" consists of three core components: their Greeting Message, their Short Description, and their Definition block (which sets personality, mannerisms, and dialogue examples).

If You Created the Bot Yourself:

  1. Log into Character.AI and navigate to your bot's chat screen.
  2. Click the three dots (...) in the top-right corner and select "View Character Settings".
  3. Copy the Name and Short Description (e.g., "Tsundere childhood friend who secretly has a crush on you").
  4. Scroll down to the "Character Definition (Advanced)" box and copy all the text inside. This includes variables like {{char}} and {{user}} dialogue samples.
  5. Paste all of this information into a local text file and save it as bot_backup.txt.

If It's a Public Community Bot (Created by Someone Else):

If the original creator made the definition public, you can view it directly under the creator profile:

  1. Click on the character's name at the top of the chat to open their profile card.
  2. Click "View Definition" (if enabled by the creator).
  3. If the definition is hidden, copy the character's opening greeting message, profile bio, and 4–5 characteristic messages from your chat history where their personality shines brightest.
